Francesco Mazzagatti: Exploring His Career, Work and Industry Impact
Energy executives operating in mature basins are always trying to find ways to navigate without collapsing under high overheads. If needed, they must rethink traditional operating methods, tear down, and rebuild from the ground up.
For someone who has seen his personal evolution from logistics to energy CEO, Francesco Mazzagatti is confident of the limitless growth opportunities in the energy sector. Mr. Mazzagatti states, "It’s not an industry that is going to die soon, as is maybe represented in the press; oil and gas will stay for decades to come."
While big players often look at their oil and gas assets through a short-term financial lens, Mazzagatti sees the sector as a dynamic platform capable of massive digital transformation and lasting social contribution.

Modernising mature assets with newer technologies
Mr. Mazzagatti argues that his company, Viaro Energy, is part of an industry that often fails to leverage innovation or adapt to newer technologies. For decades, operations in the North Sea basins were slowed down because of paper documents and isolated technical knowledge.
Today, when every other industry has adopted artificial intelligence, Mazzagatti wants the same for the Energy sector and sees the urgent need for AI integration. He is confident this will safeguard institutional memory and streamline operational transitions. When senior tech executives hang the boots, their knowledge need not perish. AI can swiftly digitise this knowledge and organise it for new engineers can easily access critical information whenever necessary.
Under Mr. Mazzagatti’s leadership, Viaro Energy is transitioning from manual processes and moving towards automation. The company modernize older operations while maintaining strict safety standards.
Francesco Mazzagatti always sees the bigger picture. According to him, true energy transition is a gradual process. The existing energy infrastructure can continue to support reliability while newer, lower-carbon technologies are introduced. In his own words, "What is also important... is what you can give back in terms of social responsibility.” Mazzagatti continues, “I want to see building a legacy— open-minded on opportunity, capital, and discipline on how to invest."
